A three-year-old boy has died after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head in Markopoulo, eastern Attica, in what appears to have been a crossfire incident between two vehicles.

Emergency medical services initially transported the child from the Markopoulo Health Center, where the young victim was taken by his parents, to Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital in Athens. The transfer was conducted under police escort by officers from the DIAS motorcycle unit.

According to early reports, the fatal injury occurred during an exchange of gunfire between occupants of two cars, reportedly involving members of the Roma community, with a stray bullet striking the child in the head.

Authorities are continuing an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
