Second handgun found at site of deadly Athens explosion; police confirm accidental detonation

A second handgun has been found at the scene of Thursday’s explosion that destroyed an Athens apartment, killing one man and critically injuring a woman, police said on Friday.

In a statement, police confirmed that the blast was caused by the accidental detonation of an explosive device. It was initially suspected that the blast was caused by a gas leak.

Authorities have also seized a loaded magazine, several mobile phones, and additional digital evidence, the statement noted.

The explosion in the central Ampelokipi neighborhood destroyed both interior and exterior walls of the third-floor apartment, blew away its balcony railings, and damaged nearby properties.

Police on Thursday said that the victim’s identity remains unknown, while the injured woman is unable to assist authorities due to the severity of her condition.
