Man with replica assault rifle arrested in Athens

A 36-year-old foreign national was arrested Saturday in the central Athens neighborhood of Omonia after police found a replica assault rifle in his backpack.
Officers stopped the man for a routine check, but he tried to flee and dumped the bag in an abandoned building. Police recovered the replica rifle, a magazine and a radio. He was also found with a knife.
The suspect was charged and taken to the prosecutor’s office.
