Androulakis topping PASOK leadership contest; battle for 2nd place

Turnout in the PASOK leadership contest has exceeded 300,000, higher than in the previous election in 2021.

With 90% of precincts reporting, current leader Nikos Androulakis is leading, with 30.63%. Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas is in second place (21.69%), narrowly leading MP Pavlos Yeroulanos (20.91%) and former MP and European Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou (19.07%).

Most of the remaining precincts are in the Athens area, where Yeroulanos and Diamantopoulou were leading earlier, with Androulakis in third and Doukas in fourth place.

The contest will go to a runoff next Sunday.

The high turnout made an extension of voting hours necessary. Polling stations closed at 8 p.m. Sunday, an hour later than initially announced.

Androulakis, 45, was elected leader in December 2021 to replace the late Fofi Gennimata, who died that October. He defeated former leader and Prime Minister George Papandreou in a runoff, 68 percent to 32 percent.

In that election, 270,706 had voted in the first round, on Dec. 5, and 207,658 in the runoff, a week later.
