LSE Hellenic Observatory relaunches as research center for Greece and Cyprus

The Hellenic Observatory at the London School of Economics (LSE) has been relaunched as the HO Center for Research on Contemporary Greece and Cyprus.

Under the new leadership of Professor Vassilis Monastiriotis, the center will focus on three primary research themes: gender roles in the economy and society, strategies for sustainable growth and the green transition, and citizenship and civic engagement.

The center aims to explore topics such as gender-based occupational segregation, the representation of femicides, decarbonization of energy-intensive industries and regional inequalities. It will collaborate with research institutes and public bodies in Greece and Cyprus to advance knowledge in these areas.

To mark the relaunch, Professor Costas Arkolakis from Yale University will deliver a public lecture on Wednesday at LSE’s Sheikh Zayed Theatre addressing the challenges and opportunities of renewable energy and clean economic growth.

Founded in 1996, the Hellenic Observatory has long been a leading hub for research on Greece and Cyprus. Its upgrade to a research center, supported by institutional donors, secures its role in shaping policy-relevant scholarship and public discourse on contemporary issues in the region.
