Proposal to open up English programs to Greeks

Greek high school graduates could soon attend tuition-based, English-language programs at public universities if a proposal by University of Athens Rector Gerasimos Siasos gains traction.

Siasos has suggested that joint degree programs between Greek and foreign universities should admit both foreign and Greek students, marking a shift toward internationalizing higher education in Greece.

Speaking at an event Thursday, Siasos highlighted that Greeks can now attend private universities, so it would be fair to open joint programs to them as well. His proposal, however, faces hurdles. Government officials have indicated such a policy might conflict with the Constitution, and could create unequal academic tiers in public institutions.

The proposal aligns with recent legislative changes allowing private universities in Greece. Siasos has raised the issue at academic meetings, but this marks his first public discussion of the idea.
