Train hits fallen trees; no injuries reported

A train travelling from Halkida to Athens hit fallen trees between Sfendali and Afidna stations, causing material damage to it and bringing it to a halt.

Operator Hellenic Train said there were no injuries to passengers or staff.

The 35 passengers on the 1531 service, which departed from Halkida at 5.03 a.m., were transferred to the 1532 service, which had left Athens at 5.24 a.m., and taken to Afidna station.

Railway traffic has been suspended on the line.

The incident comes a day after a stationmaster was suspended after allegedly giving an order that would have placed two passenger trains on a head-on collision course on the same stretch of track on Athens’ suburban railway.
