Man arrested in Crete for assaulting ex-wife, attempting to abduct child

A man was arrested Thursday morning in Hania, Crete, for beating his ex-wife and attempting to snatch their 4-year-old child outside a mayor’s office.

Witnesses told public broadcaster ERT that the woman tried to stop him from taking the child, leading him to punch her in the face and arms and kick her legs. The child reportedly ran into the street and was nearly hit by a car.

Public workers intervened and the woman was taken to a local clinic.

She had previously been a victim of domestic violence.

The woman will undergo a forensic exam Saturday. The man is expected to testify the same day.
