Two suspects held in beating of French tourist as charges upgraded

Two of four young men involved in last week’s beating of a 26-year-old French tourist in Rethymno, Crete, have been placed in custody.

A court upgraded the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony. The suspects, including two who were released, will face trial at the Mixed Jury Court.

The released men claimed they tried to prevent the attack. The victim’s lawyer pushed for harsher charges, citing medical evidence. The suspects allege the tourist and his group were also involved in the fight, with one wielding a glass bottle.
