French woman killed in sailing accident in Aegean 600 regatta

A 40-year-old French woman who was competing in the Aegean 600 regatta died in a sailing accident on Monday night off the coast of the island of Kasos.

According to preliminary reports on Tuesday, the woman was thrown into the water as gale-force winds whipped up swells as high as 2 meters in the area.

Another member of her crew, a 46-year-old Ukrainian man, also went overboard but was rescued and is in good health.

In the meantime, a 61-year-old man sailing under the Polish flag was also injured in the same event.

The Aegean 600 rally started at Cape Sounio near Athens on Sunday, with 69 vessels heading to the islands of Milos, Santorini and Kasos, before continuing to Karpathos, Rhodes, Kos and Patmos and turning at Ikaria to head back to the capital via Mykonos.
