Authorities investigate mass food poisoning incident at children’s camp

The head of the public prosecutor’s office in Athens ordered a preliminary investigation on Thursday after reports of mass food poisoning at a children’s camp in Attica.

The investigation will seek to establish the veracity of the reports and whether the offense of negligence can be established regarding the poisoning of food intended for public consumption.

Approximately 100 children, aged 6-12, were said to have suffered symptoms of poisoning. Some are hospitalized in Athens hospitals with severe stomach disorders and high fever, symptoms that are likely due to viral gastroenteritis, as the camp officials claim.

However, some parents are not ruling out the possibility that their children may be suffering from food or water poisoning, which the camp management also denies.
