Police arrest man wanted in Sweden for threatening politicians on social media

Police in Piraeus have arrested a non-national wanted by Swedish authorities for threatening politicians on social media.

The 61-year-old man was arrested in his home in Keratsini and was subsequently led before a prosecutor on charges of illegally possessing weapons.

A police statement said they found four rifles, two handguns, rounds of ammunition, three binoculars, a silencer and nine portable wireless transceivers, adding that the Swedish authorities had revoked the suspect’s license to hold weapons on suspicion of his involvement in criminal offences.

The suspect has lived in Greece “for at least a year, without having conducted the prescribed procedures to declare possession [of the weapons] to the Greek authorities,” the statement continued.

“The Swedish authorities proceeded to revoke his firearms license because he was suspected of committing crimes, as he had shared videos on a popular social networking platform with threatening content aimed at the country’s political figures,” police said.
