MoD deeply involved in Olympic works
The Ministry of Defense is involved in over 20 projects connected with the Olympic Games and its action plan for the Games calls for a budget in excess of 200 million euros. Some of the projects involve the ministry’s providing installations – like the officers’ holiday resorts at the seaside suburb of Aghios Andreas – to accommodate media representatives. Others are more obscure but necessary to the success of the Games, for example, the relocation of a communications antenna belonging to the Greek navy to make way for the rowing center at Schinias, northeast of Athens. The two media villages, adjoining each other, will house a total of 1,480 media professionals. Construction companies have already started redeveloping one of the resorts; the redevelopment of the other resort is still at the bidding stage. The army and navy academies will also be used as accommodation centers for a total of 818 umpires. The ministry will also provide health and weather services.
