Strike to paralyze transport on Wednesday
Greece’s largest public sector union, ADEDY, has called a 24-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday, demanding, among other things, pay raises and staff hirings in healthcare and education.
Workers on the metro, tram and train services, taxi drivers, port workers and air traffic controllers unions are all participating in the strike.
While the metro and tram in Athens will see a 24-hour work stoppage, buses and trolley buses will run from approximately 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
National and suburban trains will also have a work stoppage in solidarity with ADEDY. Greece-bound and outbound flights, and ship and boat services in Piraeus, Lavrio, and Rafina ports have all been canceled for 24 hours.
Taxi drivers in Athens will extend the strike to 48 hours, starting Tuesday through Wednesday, while the taxi union calls for a nationwide strike.
In Thessaloniki, a number of city buses will proceed with service.
