Greece-China relations ‘mutually beneficial,’ PM says
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis characterized the bilateral relations with China as “strong and mutually beneficial” during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday.
According to government sources, the talks covered the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, focusing on ways to enhance these relations, particularly in the areas of the economy, trade, tourism, and culture.
Mitsotakis placed particular emphasis on Greece’s recent attainment of an investment-grade status and its efforts to attract Chinese businesses. He underscored the investment opportunities available in Greece.
Furthermore, as highlighted by government sources, the discussions included an exchange of views on the relationship between China and the European Union. The Greek premier reiterated Greece’s long-standing position on the necessity for open channels of communication between the EU and China, emphasizing the mutual interest in maintaining a constructive and stable relationship. He stressed Greece’s potential role as a bridge in this relationship and expressed his belief that Europe must develop strategic autonomy in order to address global geopolitical challenges effectively.
Mitsotakis also emphasized the importance of EU-China cooperation in addressing significant challenges, such as climate change and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The two leaders also discussed regional and international issues of interest. Mitsotakis highlighted the significant role that China can play in maintaining international peace and resolving global crises, such as the war in Ukraine, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
Mitsotakis finally reiterated Greece’s unwavering commitment to seeking peaceful dispute resolutions based on international law.
