Paris: One month delay of decision on Greek businessman’s extradition to US
The French Judicial Authorities decided on a one-month extension of Greek businessman Nikos Bogonikolos’ extradition. Bogonikolos, who is completing six months in detention in Paris, is accused by the US’s FBI of sending dual-use civilian and military technological equipment to Russia in violation of sanctions imposed on the Kremlin following the invasion of Ukraine.
According to information from his defense attorney Nikos Zindros, the French Judicial Authorities gave the US one month to respond to a series of questions that will guarantee Bogonikolos’ rightful treatment by the US authorities. Specifically, the questions concern Bogonikolos’ special needs regarding his health conditions, and the length of his sentence.
Bogonikolos was arrested on May 9 on an international warrant from the US, which has since sought his extradition.
The decision of the French judicial authorities was originally expected in September, but the prosecutor of the Paris Court of Appeal delayed the procedure.
According to Zindros, the US request lacked sufficient information and clarification on the extent of the sentence that he would face if he were brought before US courts, as well as the facts that led to his arrest and detention.
