Disruptive passenger prompts emergency landing at Thessaloniki airport
An airplane traveling from Glasgow to Antalya had to make an emergency landing at Thessaloniki’s Makedonia International Airport on Sunday evening. This decision was prompted by the disruptive behavior of a female British passenger, who is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol.
Approximately two hours after takeoff, the 61-year-old passenger erupted into a tumultuous episode, involving loud verbal outbursts and physical violence. She caused self-inflicted injuries by repeatedly striking her face against the seat in front. Despite the crew’s best efforts to calm her, her violent behavior persisted. In the interest of flight safety, the pilot decided to make an emergency landing at the airport.
Airport authorities detained the woman, and she appeared before a prosecutor on Monday, facing criminal charges. These charges include disrupting transportation, causing a disturbance on the aircraft during the flight, and defying the captain’s orders. She has been scheduled for an immediate trial at the Thessaloniki Misdemeanor Court.
During the initial inquiry, the 61-year-old chose not to provide a statement, indicating that she will present her perspective in court.
