Dozens of migrants found on Cretan beach
Seventy-eight migrants who were found on a beach in southern Crete on Sunday morning were transported at the port of Iraklio, authorities said.
The local port authority provided food and shelter to the new arrivals in the port workers’ hall, while the Volunteer Samaritans are also assisting.
The migrants were located in separate groups in the south coast of the island. The first group of 64 people, all men, was spotted at around 9 a.m. by locals about one kilometre from the Agriofarango beach who notified the police. Shortly before noon, another 14 migrants were found on Vathi beach, at a steep and inaccessible spot.
According to initial information, they are Pakistani and Egyptian nationals, and it is assumed that all of them were on the same boat.
