Volos battling back-to-back disasters

It was yet another arduous night for the city of Volos in central Greece as it grappled with its second catastrophic natural disaster in just twenty days. This most recent calamity inflicted widespread devastation across the region, exacerbating the preexisting issues stemming from flooding, mudslides, infrastructure damage, and the anguish felt by thousands of city and suburban residents.

Although power has been restored to the majority of the city, the suburbs and villages in Pilio still find themselves without electricity due to the complete destruction of the network caused by fallen utility poles.

In Volos and the surrounding suburbs of Agria and Alykes, residents now confront the daunting challenge of reconstruction following a devastating flood that left a path of destruction in its wake. Homes, businesses, and vehicles bore the brunt of the deluge, and several neighborhoods were once again submerged in mud.

The regional unit of Karditsa and the municipality of Palamas remain on high alert as of Friday.

Between Wednesday at noon and Friday at 7 a.m., the Fire Department received a staggering total of 1,820 emergency calls. Furthermore, they have deployed 261 water pumps thus far and have successfully relocated 312 individuals to safe locations. [AMNA]
