Car rally security officer sentenced to prison after 2016 case revisited

A 12-month prison sentence, with a three-year suspension, was imposed on Thursday by the second instance Three-Member Misdemeanor Court of Appeal in Thessaloniki on a security officer for the death of a 47-year-old spectator, during the 46th DETH Rally, in 2016.

The incident took place in Halkidiki on the race’s route. The court found the security officer guilty of manslaughter with mitigated circumstances and sentenced him to 12 months in prison, with a 3-year suspension.

The indictment accused him of not having taken the necessary safety measures to avoid the tragic event.

The court acquitted the representative of the Federation of Motor Sports who had approved the running of the race and had been sentenced at first instance to 10 months in prison with suspension. A similar sentence had also been imposed on the driver of the racing car that hit the spectator; the driver’s case was not brought to the Court of Appeal.
