Medical association in Magnesia calls for new delay in school openings
The Medical Association of Magnesia in central Greece, one of the two regions hit badly by torrential rain last week, recommended a new postponement for the start of the school year citing serious health risks due to the contamination of the water supply system.
The delay should continue until the city of Volos “is supplied with water suitable for human use, the yards and school buildings are cleaned and disinfected, and there is easy access to the schools with a clean city without dust and piles of mud,” the association said.
Schools in Magnesia and the wider Thessaly region skipped the nationwide start of the new school year on September 11 as many areas remained submerged in water from the four-day torrential rain that hit last week. They are currently expected to open next week.
