Probe ordered into flood protections projects in Greece
The Supreme Court prosecutor has ordered an inquiry into specific projects and their funding in the region of Thessaly that was devastated by the recent floods.
The intervention concerns only projects which were assigned after the catastrophic flood caused by the Ianos weather front in the region in 2020.
It also focuses on the responsibilities of certain individuals working for the Regional Authority of Thessaly and local government officials.
These include Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos, the deputy governors in the regional units, those responsible for civil protection and the municipal authorities of Karditsa and Volos.
In particular, the probe will examine the funds for flood control projects managed by the regional authority after Ianos, namely what it did and did not do with them.
The prosecutor said the Municipality of Karditsa received €12 million for flood protection works but, according to complaints, 60% of the funds went elsewhere.
The prosecutor’s order is addressed to the prosecuting authorities of four regional units of Thessaly (Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala and Magnesia).
