Temporary solutions for pupils in flooded areas
Pupils from Thessaly’s schools that have sustained significant damage and are difficult to repair in a timely manner will attend classes in residences or neighboring schools. This is included in the Ministry of Education’s initial planning, which was done in partnership with the Regional Authority of Thessaly and the mayors of the flood-affected areas.
Tellingly, the director at one school reported that while the building is not significantly damaged, it cannot function since there are over 1,000 drowned animals in the area and a strong stench.
According to Education Ministry data, in the four regional units of Thessaly (Karditsa, Larissa, Magnesia, Trikala), there are a total of 1,036 schools with 88,227 pupils and 10,027 teachers.
A high-ranking ministry official told Kathimerini that a basic plan will be drawn up; however, the steps will be redesigned based on the damage assessment of individual schools.
