At least four migrants dead after boat sinks off Lesvos
At least four migrants died after their boat sank northeast of Lesvos island in the eastern Aegean, according to a report by public broadcaster ERT.
It added that nineteen others survived and were subsequently rescued by coast guard personnel. They have been securely transported to the port of Mytiline.
A search and rescue operation is currently in progress.
According to data from the United Nations, over 14,000 individuals have arrived in Greece through both land and sea routes within the current year. This number constitutes approximately ten percent of the overall successful Mediterranean crossings, with the majority, around 104,000, directed towards Italy. The total arrivals in Greece for the entire year of 2022 amounted to 19,000.
