Doctor resignations multiply, leaving national healthy system teetering

The constant movement of doctors from hospital to hospital to fill vacancies, exhausting working hours, constant on-call duty and understaffed emergency departments at regional health units have led many doctors to resign, placing renewed pressure on the country’s national health system (ESY).

Indicatively, last week, of the nine surgeons at the hospital of Hania on Crete, four submitted their resignation, while pathologists at the Venizelio Hospital in Iraklio are threatening to do the same.

Three pathologists at Serres hospital in northern Greece are reportedly also on the verge of resignation.
