Rodopi fire contained, battle continues on Mount Olympus
Authorities on Monday reported that a wildfire, which broke out in a forest area near the village of Ardeia in the region of Rodopi in northern Greece, has been successfully contained. However, firefighting efforts were still ongoing on Mount Olympus to extinguish another wildfire blazing through a pine forest in a challenging and inaccessible location near the village of Karya.
In Rodopi, a team of 63 firefighters, supported by 14 vehicles and four ground teams on foot, along with assistance from municipal water tankers, two fire brigade planes, and two helicopters, were actively combating the fire that began on Sunday afternoon. The flames were confined to the forest and posed no direct threat to residential areas.
Meanwhile, the fire on Mount Olympus, which also broke out on Sunday, was mainly contained within a rocky ravine, presenting a more positive situation on Monday morning, according to sources from the fire brigade. Nevertheless, firefighting efforts persisted with the aid of firefighting aircraft to fully control the situation. [AMNA]
