Final attempt to form coalition government fails, setting stage for new election

A meeting of political party leaders convened by President Katerina Sakellaropoulou in a final attempt to form a coalition government after Sunday’s inconclusive elections proved unsuccessful on Wednesday.

The outcome was expected, as the three main parties – New Democracy, SYRIZA and PASOK – had previously declined separate mandates to form a coalition. Consequently, this failure paves the way for new elections, likely to take place on June 25.

Party leaders left the Presidential Palace without making statements to the press.

Sakellaropoulou is now expected to appoint a senior judge to lead a caretaker government in the run-up to the vote.
