More backlash against Exarchia metro
Fifty residents of Athens’ Exarchia district have taken recourse to the Council of State to prevent the construction of a metro station in the area’s main square.
Targeting the construction site that has been set up in the square rather than the project itself, the latest complaint filed by residents claims the technical environmental impact study did not account for the square’s plant life, cultural character and historical buildings.
It specifically claims there is no plan to replace trees and shrubs that are being cut down, nor to protect listed buildings and the area around the National Archaeological Museum from possible damage from intensive construction work.
