Blueprint unveiled for the reconstruction of Evia
A year after the devastating forest fires that destroyed about a third of Evia’s forest cover, the government Tuesday unveiled a 381-million-euro plan to regenerate Greece’s second-largest island.
A total 71 projects will be up for tender, including a new highway in the northern part of the island, an employment training program for resin farmers who used to live from the forest and an extensive reforestation program.
Other actions include subsidies for businesses in fire-stricken areas that have also suffered because of the Covid-19 pandemic and an employment program for 300 jobless people, aged between 18-20.
The projects are expected to secure funding within the next two years. Officials said the blueprint, dubbed Evia Meta (Greek for later), also includes projects for which no funding has been secured.
