University of Western Macedonia introduces new dorm rules

The University of Western Macedonia has introduced a new rulebook for its dormitories that seeks to make students more responsible and accountable, both toward the institution and the space they live in and share with others, and toward their academic responsibilities.

The pioneering initiative – for Greek university standards – is in the form of a private agreement that all new admissions to the university’s dorms in Florina, Kozani and Grevena must sign before taking up residence.

Among other stipulations, it requires them to pay a 100-euro non-refundable deposit to cover wear and tear, to agree to reimburse the university in the event of losses or damage to its property and to keep their room clean. Students are also required to pass at least 50% of their classes every semester and are not entitled to accommodation past the duration of their degree.

“We’re trying to change the mentality,” says Vice Rector Anna Spyrtou.
