Attica to receive over 700 new police officers, minister says
Attica region is set to receive 708 new police officers in a boost to local policing, Citizens’ Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos told Skai radio on Monday.
The locations chosen as bases for the new teams have been selected based on those areas that generate the most policing demand or have higher crime levels, with Theodorikakos saying that 70 percent of crime is concentrated in the greater Athens area.
He said that further announcements on night patrols will be made in two weeks.
Theodorikakos also slammed leftist SYRIZA’s lukewarm response to the recent crackdown on rampant criminality at the Zografou campus of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
“It is unacceptable that those who created this mess criticize those who are now cleaning it up,” the conservative minister said, accusing the main leftist opposition of “tolerating” the phenomenon while in power.
