Lightning strike burns roof, staircase in Thessaloniki apartment building
A large fire started on the roof and the main staircase of an apartment building in eastern Thessaloniki, northern Greece, last Friday when a powerful bolt of lighting hit it during the night.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on June 17, during a thunderstorm. Residents of the seven-storey residence on Anastasiou Bakalbasi Street woke up to a deafening sound to find that windows had been smashed, power was down, and a fire had started on the roof and staircase of the building, according to a local news website.
The high electrical load destroyed electrical appliances in several apartments. “It was like a bomb dropped, the lights went out. We heard windows being broken. Two TVs burned in my house. It was something shocking,” a resident told thestival.gr.
The fire service sent five firefighters with two vehicles.
