A year since Mati tragedy
Photojournalist Yannis Kolesidis holds an image from July 24, 2018, of a woman walking in front of a row of burnt cars, a day after the devastating wildfires in the east Attica seaside town of Mati, as a man walks with his bicycle at the same location, Monday. The blaze, which claimed the lives of 102 people, has been blamed on a mix of adverse weather conditions, flawed urban planning and state incompetence. Several people drowned as they tried to swim away from the intense heat and smoke engulfing the beaches. [Yannis Kolesidis, EPA]
