Athens suburbs hit by heavy rainfall, flash floods

Cars float in a parking lot-turned-muddy lake following a squall in the northern Athens suburb of Maroussi, Thursday. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area and closed a side road off the main highway leading north out of the capital. The fire department received more than 200 calls for assistance, including pumping water from flooded homes and businesses. The storm also affected the suburbs of Kifissia and Melissia. No injuries were reported. The flash floods came three days after a deadly wildfire east of Athens. [EPA]
