Afghan boy, 11, to carry Greek flag at parade after lot selection
Amir, an 11-year-old refugee boy from Afghanistan, will carry the Greek flag during the annual school parade to commemorate the October 28, 1940 anniversary of Greece’s refusal to ally with the Axis powers in World War II, known as "Ochi Day." Amir, a fifth-year primary school pupil, lives with his family in Athens. They arrived on the island of Lesvos a year and a half ago. He was picked by lot under new rules introduced by the leftist-led government earlier this year that scrapped selection on the basis of academic performance. [Simela Pantzartzi/ANA-MPA]
