The aroma of grilled and roasted meats filled the streets in cities and towns across the country on Thursday, marking an important date in the “Apokries,” the three-week Greek Carnival season. Tsiknopempti, which is on the second to last Thursday before Lent, is a day of feasting before fasting commences. It also signals the start of big carnival events around the country, which culminate on Sunday, March 17, the day before Clean Monday, a public holiday celebrated with another feast, this one of fish and seafood.
