Naoussa prepares for ancient revelries
Michalis Tomtsis holds a Genitsaros mask in his Anogi workshop in Naoussa, in northern Greece. For 30 years, the workshop has been creating costumes for the town’s Genitsaroi and Boules custom. The annual event, which is held in the Carnival period in early spring, is rooted in the worship of Dionysus, god of wine and revelry. It was listed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.
