Hacking electronic devices helps police solve crimes
At the Digital Evidence Examination Unit of the Hellenic Police’s Criminal Investigations Division, experts search for evidence of criminal activity by examining, and hacking into, a range of confiscated electronic devices, from cellphones, to computers, smartwatches and even drones. Digital forensics, says the division’s head, Major General Penelope Miniati, has been a “third revolution in applied criminology” after fingerprinting and DNA analysis, allowing law enforcement to solve many types of crime such as the recent murder of Caroline Crouch by her husband.
