Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced that discussions on the Cyprus-Crete electricity interconnection are advancing positively. Addressing criticism that the government is delaying decisions on the project, he stressed that the government is focused on long-term benefits, not short-term political gains.

Speaking at an event in Larnaca, Christodoulides responded to political parties’ criticism, stating, “It is perfectly fitting that some people are thinking about the next elections, while we, as a government, are thinking about the next generations.”

He highlighted recent international interest in the project, noting that his trip on Wednesday to the United Arab Emirates was strategically significant. “Our discussions are progressing, and we are working on specific aspects,” he said. He emphasized that the final decisions will prioritize the interests of the Cypriot people and future generations.

Christodoulides also revealed plans to meet with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on September 19 to further discuss the interconnection project. He mentioned that daily communications have been ongoing to address key details.
