Farmers call for support from gov’t

Farmers from all over the island of Crete gathered in Iraklion yesterday and emptied cases of grapes onto the city streets as they called for financial support from the government. The farmers then drove through the center of Iraklion with large black flags attached to their tractors and utility trucks before submitting their resolution of their demands to authorities at the local prefecture offices. Among the claims put forward are steps to help reduce farming costs and raise prices for milk, meat, olive oil, grapes and other products. With the grape harvest in full swing, farmers have also demanded measures to support wine production in Greece, which they say is experiencing financial difficulties.
