SYRIZA takes stance against Ethniki deal

Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras speaks in Athens with workers at Ethniki General Insurance, owned by National Bank, yesterday. National Bank, the country’s largest lender, plans to find a strategic partner for the insurance subsidiary in an attempt to tap opportunities in the sector in Greece and the Balkans. The bank, which has operations in 12 countries, wants to focus on developing bancassurance products in Greece, Southeastern Europe and Turkey. Some press reports have said the search for a strategic partner will involve selling off the insurance unit to a foreign buyer and job cuts. Tsipras said his party opposes the deal and has promised to support workers.
