Rail network upgrade due by 2014

Transport Minister Costis Hatzidakis met with European Union Commissioner for Regional Policy Danuta Hubner in Athens yesterday where they discussed infrastructure projects taking place in Greece, particularly relating to public transport. ‘There will be parallel tracks along the length of the Athens-Thessaloniki line that will be fully powered by electricity by 2013. The same applies for the Athens-Patras line by 2014,’ said the Greek minister. The two also discussed methods to improve Athens’s bus and tram network. Greece will receive more than 20 billion euros as part of the European Union’s 2007-2013 package aimed at improving the country’s infrastructure, with a large chunk of the funds going to transport.
