Stock prices hit by foreign news

Stocks tumbled yesterday on the local bourse on bad news about eurozone GDP and the closing of a major hedge fund in the US that had an impact also on international markets. The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) closed at 3,293.98 points yesterday, a 1.42 percent decrease from Tuesday. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index declined by 1.61 percent to 1,817.39 points. Ending the day on a high were the blue chips of Viohalco (up 1.73 percent), Titan (0.99 percent) and Ellaktor (0.85 percent). The worst losses were for Intralot (down 4.33 percent), Piraeus Bank (4.18 percent), Alpha Bank (3.98 percent) and Marfin Popular Bank (3.96 percent). Among sectoral indices, industrial products registered the most gains (up 0.82 percent), while worst off was the raw materials index (down 2.83 percent). Turnover reached 219.6 million euros.
