Santorini mayor says island has reached its tourism limit
Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos has asked the Greek Tourism Ministry to declare that the island has reached its tourism saturation point, as the law provides for.
Over the course of Santorini’s first International Wine Tourism Congress that took place there this week, Zorzos said that 11 percent of the island’s surface area has already been covered by buildings and structures, adding that construction has not stopped.
He added that a limit ought to be placed on the excessive exploitation of Santorini by tourism.
His demand was echoed by Agricultural Development Minister Vangelis Apostolou and Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris at the same conference.
