Jobless figures suffer small setback
The small drop in unemployment figures in previous months showed a worrying reversal in the first month of the summer, as official Manpower Organization (OAED) data on Tuesday indicated an spike in the number of registered unemployed by 10,643 people in June compared with May.
The total number of the jobless registered with OAED came to 950,025 last month against 939,562 in May. There is also an annual increase in the figures, as in June 2015 the registered unemployed came to 933,460, when they had shrunk by 2,474 from May in the same year.
Another source of concern is the very low share of the people receiving an unemployment benefit, coming to just one in 10 jobless Greeks. In June, only 88,336 people received the benefit, of which 6.44 percent (5,687 people) are seasonal workers in the tourism sector. There were 43,125 men and 45,211 women receiving a jobless allowance last month.
From a total of 827,133 people who actively seek work (as the rest of those registered do not), more than half, 437,751, have been on the OAED register for at least 12 months. An impressive five out of eight (62.5 percent) are women, amounting to 516,992, against 310,141 men.
