Gov’t to draft law for taxing lease of homes for tourism

The government has belatedly decided to intervene in the issue of widespread tax evasion in tourism accommodation.

The ministries of Economy and Tourism and of Finance will cooperate on the drafting of a legislative framework for the taxation of leasing private homes as holiday accommodation, which has hitherto gone completely untaxed.

During a general meeting of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels, chamber president Giorgos Tsakiris asked that the government speed up the process to resolve the issue, which according to the head of the Association of Hellenic Tourism Enterprises (SETE), Andreas Andreadis – who spoke at the same meeting – will fetch some 250 million euros annually into the state coffers and could realize the sector’s request that value-added tax on accommodation be reduced back to competitive levels.
