Bank stocks rebound after major losses

The new lows registered by bank stocks on Tuesday produced a small rebound on Wednesday, serving as a correction that was aided by the rise in the main markets of Europe and the USA.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 735.51 points, rebounding by 0.71 percent from Tuesday?s closing figure of 730.33. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index grew by 0.83 percent to 294.88 points, although the small-cap FTSE/ATHEX 80 index contracted by 0.18 percent.

Marfin Investment Group recovered its Tuesday losses, adding 15 percent on Wednesday. Piraeus Bank followed with gains of 5.56 percent. OPAP, on the other hand, declined by 4.76 percent.

In total, 59 stocks moved up, 57 went down and 54 remained unchanged.

Turnover came to 43.3 million euros, down from Tuesday’s 60.3 million.
