Cards now Greeks’ favorite payment means

The most popular means of payment in Greece is cards, as in the last 12 months consumers who relied on card payments outnumbered those who chose cash payments.

This stems from a survey by Payments Europe – the “voice” of the card payment industry in Europe – regarding the payment landscape in Greece.

Research findings show that 68% of consumers trust cards more than other payment methods. Other methods include cash, money transfers and buy now, pay later (BNPL).

This trend is even more pronounced among younger generations, who are attracted by the ever-increasing options offered by digital payment methods.

More than 70% of Greeks belonging to the Millennial generation and Gen Z predict that in the next 12 months they will rely more on new forms of digital payments.

Merchant confidence in card payments is similarly high, with 77% agreeing that the benefits of cards outweigh the costs and 62% prefer to accept online payments over cash.
