Job vacancies up 54% in a year

Which are the 10 occupations that are in most need of workers in the Greek labor market?

Job vacancies up 54% in a year

The number of job vacancies in Greece in the second quarter of 2024 amounted to 53,814, 54.4% higher compared to the corresponding quarter of 2023, according to Eurostat’s seasonally adjusted data.

As long as the positive momentum of the labor market continues – i.e. as long as employment and participation in the labor force increase – so will the jobs that remain vacant due to the mismatch of skills demanded and available.

In the recent quarterly report of the Parliamentary Budget Office, most job vacancies are found in tourism (16.4%), the public sector – specifically in public administration, defense and social security – (14.6%) and in administrative and support activities (13.7%).

The report states that the ever-increasing number of job vacancies, despite the available labor force indicating the level of unemployment, demonstrates the mismatch of required and offered skills in the Greek labor market. This discrepancy was the subject of a recent study carried out by the National Documentation Center (EKT). One of the key findings of the survey was that most businesses (52.4%) are looking for staff to meet their regular needs due to growth than to cover temporary/seasonal needs.

Demand is focused on young workers: Most companies focus on hiring staff with less experience (up to five years), certified knowledge (training, specialization, education), regardless of gender, and offer a salary of up to 1,500 euros. Demand is not focused on a specific skill level: Most businesses (43.4%) are looking for highly skilled professionals, followed by unskilled workers (26.6%) in second place.

According to the processing of the available data from the Labor Market Needs Diagnosis Mechanism, the 10 highly skilled vacancies most likely to be filled immediately are: supervisors/task managers, process control technicians, maritime and aviation controllers and technicians, management professionals, manufacturing managers, doctors, agents and brokers, software and application designers and analysts, financial managers, and paramedics.
