ATHEX: Bourse pares losses by the closing bell

Foreign pressures brought prices down on the Greek stock market from the start of Wednesday’s session, but many stocks reacted toward the end and contained their losses considerably. Likewise, the benchmark regained some of the ground lost over the course of the day and its decline upon the close will not concern observers, as it points to a likely rebound.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,435.79 points, shedding 0.71% from Tuesday’s 1,446.09 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index contracted 0.81%, ending at 3,483.30 points.

The banks index conceded 1.05%, on National falling 1.90%, Alpha dropping 1.27%, Eurobank parting with 0.98% and Piraeus giving up 0.23%.

Among the other blue chips, Public Power Corporation lost 2.05%, Metlen shied 2.03%, Ellaktor shed 1.92%, GEK Terna was down 1.59% and Autohellas shrank 1.57%, while OTE advanced 1.28%.

In total 21 stocks boasted gains, 72 posted losses and 26 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 98.2 million euros, up from Tuesday’s €85.1 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange decreased 1.55% to 179.55 points.
